What happens if someone finds your password? In many cases, access to your account is possible. Multifactor authentication (MFA) adds another step, which makes it harder for someone else to log in. It uses a second method to confirm your identity, giving extra safety during sign-ins.
What is multifactor authentication?
Multi factor authentication is a security feature that asks for more than just a password. After typing the password, a second check is necessary. This second step could be a code sent by SMS, an app notification, a fingerprint, or a security key. Even if the password is known, the extra step adds a barrier.
Types of second steps:
There are different second steps in MFA. A common one is a six-digit code sent to a phone. Another type uses an authentication app like Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator, which generates codes that change every few seconds. Some devices use face or fingerprint scans. Each of these adds an extra level to the sign-in process.
Where MFA is used:
MFA is used in many places such as emails, social media accounts, cloud storage, and banking apps. Some websites offer it as an option in account settings. Turning it on means that even if the password is leaked, no one else can log in without completing the second step.
Why it matters:
Passwords are often reused or easy to guess. People sometimes share them or store them in browsers. If one website is attacked, the same password might work elsewhere. MFA stops this chain. Even if the password is stolen, access will still be blocked if the second check is missing.
Setting up MFA:
To start using MFA, go to the account settings of the website or app. Look for terms like “two-step verification” or “login security.” Choose the method you prefer, such as a text message or an authenticator app. Follow the steps shown on the screen and save backup codes if given.
Keeping backup access:
Sometimes, phones are lost or apps stop working. Most services give backup codes or allow trusted devices. These are used if the normal second step fails. It is helpful to store these codes in a safe place that is easy to reach if necessary.
